McKissick Museum is the
host museum of the Pets in America exhibit. Housed in
a building that was constructed in 1939, and part of the Works
Progress Administration, the museum was established in 1976 by
the University Board of Trustees to bring together under one roof
the many object collections housed in various departments and
colleges throughout campus. These collections date back to 1801
and provide insight into the long and illustrious history of the
University and the region. McKissick Museum is accredited by the
American Association of Museums. As the museum approaches its
thirtieth anniversary, it remains one of the outstanding general
university museums in the Southeast. The collections have grown
extensively since 1976 and now include significant holdings of
regional natural science, folklife, material culture, and fine
and decorative arts.
The Pets in America exhibit was organized
and implemented through the work of McKissick Museum staff and
University of South Carolina graduate students. The Pets in
America exhibit will debut at the McKissick Museum on December
3, 2005 and will be on display there through April 22, 2006. For
